Our Working Model: PRECEDE/PROCEED
The PRECEDE-PROCEED model is
specifically designed for health promotion programming. The
acronym PRECEDE stands for 'predisposing,
reinforcing, and enabling constructs in educational/ecological
diagnosis and evaluation'; PROCEED
correlates to 'policy, regulatory, and organizational constructs
in educational and environmental development'. In other words,
this model operates as a continuum of phases centered around
planning, implementation, and evaluation of a health promotion
plan. The phases of PRECEDE
set direction and objectives for the subsequent phases of
PROCEED.
There are 9 phases in total for this model; the following
is a brief summary:
| PRECEDE |
Phase 1 |
Social Assessment
-evaluates the quality of life for the target population
(i.e. asking people what they think, their feelings
and experiences)
|
| |
Phase 2 |
Epidemiological Assessment
-identifies and ranks goals or problems, often from
the needs seen in phase 1 (e.g. measurements of mortality,
fertility, disability, longevity, etc.)
|
| |
Phases 3-5 |
Behavioural & Environmental/
Educational & Ecological/ Administrative & Policy
Assessments
-each of these phases identifies risk factors or conditions
in their respective areas, often linking with of each
other
|
| |
|
|
| PROCEDE |
Phase 6 |
Implementation
-after careful consideration of all that was assessed
in the PRECEDE phase, a strategy (or strategies) begins
aimed at health promotion
|
| |
Phases 7-9 |
Process/ Impact/ Outcome
Evaluations
-this final period assesses the chosen interventional
strategies (recall phase 6) as they progress in the
population; in other words, were the interventional
plans effective or not at enhancing health promotion
and/or healthy decision making.
